August 2017 – violence in Rakhine State

Displaced Rohingya people.

Reports of horrific scenes of violence and destruction emerge from Rahkine State on the west coast of Myanmar. This begins the day after the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced international recommendations for peace and reconciliation in the territory. Over the following months, violence escalates, resulting in over 700,000 people forced from their homes to seek shelter in refugee camps on the border with Bangladesh.
