May 2008 – Cyclone Nargis creates devastation

The worst recorded natural disaster in Myanmar’s history, Cyclone Nargis, devastates the country. Over 130,000 people are killed or lost in the destruction. Community-based groups respond in providing emergency aid, reflecting the revival of civil society activism in the country. In its aftermath, the government continues with a referendum to introduce a new constitution and system of quasi-civilian democracy.
