June 1990 – Education projects for crisis areas

Students at a jungle teacher-training school

The knock-on effects of 8888 are far-reaching. The Tatmadaw ignores the result of the May 1990 election result, which was overwhelmingly won by the National League for Democracy (NLD); the universities remain closed; and Prospect Burma broadens its work to reach deprived peoples in ethnic minority communities. From 1990-1994 we start teacher-training programmes among Karen and Karenni peoples; we help to establish a refugee school on the Indo-Bangladesh frontier; and we diversify into health, language and vocational-training projects for student refugees sheltering around the country’s borders.
